Specialised Clinics
Practice Nurses
Our practice nurses are very experienced and can offer advice on a wide variety of health problems. They are trained to do an extensive number of procedures and clinics including: diabetic, asthma, heart and other chronic disease management clinics, well woman/well man clinics, health promotion, holiday advice and vaccinations, injections, smears, dressings and suture removal. If you are unsure whether the practice nurse may be able to help you with your medical problem, please ask at reception, or you can speak to the nurse in confidence via a telephone consultation.
Antenatal Clinics
These are held every Tuesday from 9.15-11.30am at Thurmaston please contact surgery for details and times at Walnut St and Aylestone Road Medical Centre.
Child Health Surveillance
Appointments for this can be made within a regular surgery, but you must advise the receptionists of this so we can allow extra time for your appointment. The service includes six-week baby checks and postnatal examinations.
Children's Immunisations Clinics
These are run by the practice nurse on a weekly basis or every other week.
New Patient Health Checks
Before we can consider your registration with our surgery you must attend an appointment to see the nurse for a new patient health check. Failure to attend this appointment (unless you have informed us in advance that you are unable to attend) will mean, unfortunately, that we will be unable to accept you onto our list.
Travel Advice And Vaccinations
This is available by appointment only with the practice nurse. You will be asked to complete a travel questionnaire prior to your vaccinations. The practice nurse will then review your medical records to determine what vaccines you will require, and she will contact you directly to arrange an appointment.
It is vital that you arrange your vaccines at least two months before you travel to allow us sufficient time to arrange them for you.
Minor Surgery Clinics
We are able to perform certain minor surgery procedures such as wart/verrucae removal and injections for pain relief. You will need an initial appointment with the doctor who will assess whether you are a suitable case for minor surgery.
Minor Injury Clinics
We are a recognised minor injury clinic. So if you suffer an injury for which you would normally attend the accident and emergency department, we may be able to treat you at the surgery.
You are requested to telephone the surgery to speak to the doctor on call, who will assess if you are suitable for treatment at the surgery eg stitches for cuts, dressings for burns etc.
This service is only available when the surgery is open; at any other time you may still need to attend the A&E department if your injury is severe.
Well Person Checks
We actively encourage all patients aged between 16 and 75 years to visit the surgery at least once every three years for a general health check with the practice nurse, which allows us to maintain an up-to-date picture of your general health.
Remember, you do not always need to be ill to see the doctor; we are also here to promote healthy living.
Elderly Persons Checks
We offer annual health checks to all patients over the age of 75 with our practice nurse. Home visits can be arranged under special circumstances if the patient is housebound. Please ask the receptionist for more details on this service.
Blood Tests
We have a practice-based phlebotomist who operates a clinic every morning for blood tests at our Thurmaston site, or on a Monday and Friday morning at the Walnut Street site Wednesday and Thursday mornings at Aylestone Road. This schedule may vary depending on demand and availability.
The Emergency Contraceptive Pill
This can be taken up to three days after unprotected sex (sex without using a method of contraception). However, the sooner it is taken, the better it will work. For a prescription for the emergency pill, please telephone the surgery during the emergency times stated and ask to speak to the doctor on call. At weekends the emergency pill is available from the Loughborough NHS Walk-in Centre or The Leicester Royal Infirmary NHS Walk-In Centre.
It is also possible to buy the emergency pill from pharmacists (clients aged 16 years and over only) at a cost of around £20.
Antibiotics
The doctors do not prescribe antibiotics for simple coughs and colds; if you are concerned about your symptoms you can have a telephone consultation with the doctor to reassure you that you do not have an infection. Medical research has proven that antibiotics are ineffective in the treatment of viral illnesses.
Paracetamol and plenty of fluids should ease your symptoms until the virus leaves your body.
You may also wish to take advantage of the minor ailment scheme as pharmacists will be able to recommend treatments to ease your symptoms.
